The Most Horrific Types of Medieval Torture: The breast ripper

As you may have assumed from its name, torturers used the breast ripper primarily to inflict pain upon women. The claws were often heated up before being attached to the victim's exposed breasts. Women were strapped to a table or wall while a torturer pulled the device away. There was a similar device called the Iron Spider that was attached to walls and worked the same way with the woman pulled away from the wall.

If the victim wasn't killed, she would be left mutilated for life. This treatment was a punishment for accused adulterers, unwed mothers, witches, and heretics.

The Breast Ripper is a torture device made from iron that is often heated to shred off the breast tissues of any accused woman. It is suggested that the instrument was used on women who have committed adultery and abortion, possibly in Germany during the 16th century to the 19th century.

At the time, a suspect was tortured with the heated instrument, its four claws would be clamped over her breasts. The torturer would slowly turn it and pull it, leaving her breast tissues completely ripped off. If she survived, her damaged chest would mark her for life. As punishment, she would not be able to breastfeed her future children.

Another device similar to the Breast Ripper is the Spider. During the torture, the device was affixed to the wall and the accused woman’s breasts were attached to its claws. The accused was then pulled away, ripping off her breasts.

The breast ripper, known in another form as the Iron Spider or simply the Spider, was a torture instrument used on women, usually who were accused of an array of negative attributes decided by male inquisitors. The instrument was designed to rip the breasts from a woman and was made from iron, which was usually heated.

The Spider, also known as the Iron Spider, was a torture device similar to the breast ripper. The Iron Spider would have been attached to the wall and the woman's breasts were fixed onto the claws of the tool. The woman was then pulled away from the wall, tearing off her breasts. Another variant of this included spiked bars affixed slightly away from the wall. The woman would have been pulled along the bars until her breasts were ripped off
